Problem with webroot antivirus with spy sweeper

Current Spy Sweeper customers' apps will be automatically upgraded to version 5. We suggest all Spy Sweeper users wait and purchase the antivirus component in a future release.

Note: the trial copy of Spy Sweeper will not remove any spyware it identifies unless you purchase the full product; we think this is wrong, and a crude way to force sales. We experienced no difficulties installing Spy Sweeper 5. After installation, we were asked to reboot our system. Should you decide to uninstall Spy Sweeper, Webroot includes an uninstall icon on the All Programs list. After rebooting, we found no trace of Spy Sweeper in the Program Files directory or the system registry.

Interface The Spy Sweeper 5. Webroot's integration of Sophos is invisible; for example, there's no separate configuration page for antivirus scans, which initially started us wondering just how much antivirus protection exists within Spy Sweeper.

To tweak antispyware scans for individual files or folders, simply use the various Spy Sweeper configuration screens; however, we could find no separate configuration options for the antivirus part of the product, such as protective settings to block incoming viruses from e-mail or IM, a setting found in many traditional antivirus products.

Spy Sweeper's interface is crisp and intuitive, the result of many hours of user-interface testing. For example, we like that during a scan, the color-coded tabs on the scan page mark your progress: Sweeping, Quarantine, and Summary. Features Aside from antivirus protection, Spy Sweeper continues to provide first-class antispyware protection and adds new antirootkit protection in SpySweeper 5. SpySweeper uses protective shields to protect your hard drive, blocking spyware and adware as it attempts to download.

Within the Spy Sweeper Sweep section there are three options: Full Sweep scans all the files on your computer's attached drives; Quick Sweep offers a fast and light pass of your main drive system; and Custom Sweep allows you to select individual drives or folders or exclude extensions.

We installed Spy Sweeper 5. In theory, we should have experienced trouble, since both Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm include competing antivirus protection. But we were able to run a full Spy Sweeper scan concurrent with a ZoneAlarm antivirus scan. In the scareware test, Webroot tied for the top both in detection percentage and removal score. Along with Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware Pro it detected 89 percent of the scareware threats and blocked them perfectly to score 8.

Webroot's numerous protective shields did a seriously impressive job protecting my clean test system from malware infestation, especially rootkits and scareware.

It even aced the keylogger-protection test. Low on False Positives Webroot includes a number of other shields that react to specific system changes made by any program. If a program installs a Browser Helper Object, tries to add an ActiveX control to Internet Explorer, or if it attempts to launch from an Alternate Data Stream, the corresponding shield will pop up and ask you whether to allow it.

These popups aren't hard to handle. Almost no valid programs try to launch from Alternate Data Streams—that's a rootkit trick! So you can always block that one.

The behavior that trips up many antivirus programs involves modification of the startup sequence. A huge number of perfectly valid programs add themselves to the startup sequence at install, or upon changing configuration, or both. Some programs report all of these and require your permission. Webroot wisely limits Startup Shield warnings to activity by known malware. You can also dig into Startup Shield and control which valid programs are permitted to launch at startup.

At least it isn't outright dangerous, like the AutoStart Manager in Ad-Aware Pro, which can easily disable essential Windows components. It didn't gripe at all about the rest. Spyware Doctor's behavior guard feature, by contrast, frequently popped up text-laden boxes reporting valid files as suspicious.

There's a lot to like in Webroot's model. Its well-crafted interface has been made as simple as possible, but not too simple—Spyware Doctor could use a similar makeover. While Webroot didn't ace every test, it consistently made the top three, and, unlike many products, it did well both at malware prevention and at cleaning up existing infestations. You won't go wrong choosing Webroot to protect your system against viruses and other types of malware. More Antivirus Reviews:.
